I have sewn for most of my life, and my focus has always been on practicality and on detailed construction. This all changed when I tried a crazy-quilting project. Another whole world opened up, one where colours, fabrics and textures could be mixed. My collection of vintage linens, buttons and lace could be used. I had found a way to sew without being bogged down by rules!
The crazy quilting led me to revisit long-unused embroidery skills, which are now used extensively to decorate along seam lines. I started to develop an "eye" for interesting fabrics, many of which are found in thrift stores. I became a collector of "potentially useful" things.
I still enjoy crazy quilting, but I also enjoy taking all the bits I have collected, up-cycling them by re-configuring them into something whimsical and pretty. Life can be serious, demanding and busy and it is not a bad thing to have a little whimsy to lighten and brighten a day.
